We all thank our kids, parents, teachers, and all those people who contributed to have a very successful Solidarity Week. Once more our Saint George's family stood up and helped us to enjoy of a very colorful week. These were three days where our kids whilst wearing jeans, pyjamas, and extravagant clothes showed thier love and enthusiasm for participating on this cruzade of love. All the allocated funds are destined for improvements at School 22267 in Sunampe Chincha.There are plans afoot to continue helping the kids in this school and we hope you join us and contribute to better the conditions where the kids from this school study. I´m sure you all remember César Miranda. He won two trophies for being the best male actor in our ASDRAM events and made us win the ASDRAM plaque three times. Now, do you know who I am talking about?

Cesar is that boy who pushed by his passion to help the needy got involved in St. George's Patrol and together with all SGP team took our school donations and happines to the kids at "La Candelaria School" in Villa Maria del Triunfo. Now, do you know who I'm talking about?

He left us last year, finishing Highschool successfully and making us tear for we finally saw Cesar´s school story arrive at its end.

Now he has started his plans to conquer his destiny as an economist and his first step to success is to study in New York. He's travelling this Thursday 27th in search of his dreams. We do know how responsible and determined Cesar is and we do know he´ll achieve all his goals in life.

His friends and teachers offered him a farewell party to say goodbye to a very good fellow...

Goodbye Cesar! We all love you very much!

Our Third Term starts off full of opportunities for students to become involved on the St. George's College. Activities such as Spring Festival, Nueva Acropolis, Solidarity Week, and Tournaments among many other ones are awaiting for our students to help them grow physically, emotionally, and socially. Through all these activities our students will learn to support their own interest, preparing them for real world.

Las necesidades nutricionales de los adolescentes vienen marcados por los procesos de maduración sexual, aumento de talla e incremento de peso, caracteristicos de esta etapa de la vida. Hay que tener en cuenta que en esta fase el adolescente adquiere aproximadamente el 20% de la talla y el 50% de peso que va a tener como adulto. Estos incrementos coinciden con un aumento de la masa muscular y ósea; por lo tanto, requiere una mayor cantidad de energia y nutrientes, tales como: carbohidratos, proteinas, grasas, vitaminas y minerales, en forma equilibrada y balanceada.
Nuestro cuerpo necesita disponer de energia a cada instante, al igual que los vehículos necesitan combustible para moverse. Al levantarnos, despues de pasar toda la noche sin comer, nuestro nivel de energia es muy bajo, de modo que conviene tomar un buen desayuno, consumir refrigerios a media mañana y media tarde, además del almuerzo que debe ser completo y la cena.

Christmas is a time to share and to stand up and say here we are representing our Lord on earth as He commands us to do. Jesus Christ is born again in our hearts and it is His wish to "shout"to the entire world that He exists and will prevail for eternity as far as we let Him enter in our hearts and souls. "To shout" not with empty words that hardly convince those who are thirsty of love and claim for hope. "To shout" with actions...
Actions like the ones experienced by St George’s Patrol last Thursday at La Candelaria School in Villa Maria del Triunfo. Last Thursday St. George's Patrol inspired by the spirit of Christmas took to a group of little lovable kids a toy, a can, and a kilo together with a musical show and a dramatization carefully prepared by our students.
I want to thank all those involved in our last action of love and wish you all a Merry Chrsitmas and a Happy New Year!

On November 8th, St. George's Patrol led by Pilar Galup and Veronica Navarro went to Sunanmpe, Chincha to fulfil a promise left to the Head of 22267 School when for first time we visited them.
I couldn't go with them this time but the pictures taken in both opportunities show how unforgettable the experiences were. I put them all in a video and I can say "Actions speak louder than words"

The Importance of Being St. Georgian

It's amazing to see what a team can achieve if every member is really convinced of his or her potentials and talents. In fact every person is like a "Pandora Box" where all the most precious things are hidden secretly awaiting the moment to be "discovered". When these are finally revealed and released, come out satisfaction and a profound sentiment of achievement and happiness from the discoverers.

This is the feeling which invaded my heart and my soul the day we obtained the winner plaque in ASDRAM VI this year. The drama teachers and myself felt together discoverers of a wonderful group of individuals whose talents were more than revealed but unveiled to all the audience attending this event.

We were witnesses of a spectacular performance of the drama team coached by Juan Carlos Orderique and Lolo who together with nine spectacular actors staged "The Importance of Being Earnest". These are: Cesar Miranda, Jack Worthing; Gabriel Gomez-Sanchez, Algernon Moncrieff; Ximena Grandez, Gwendolen Fairfax; Nicole Censano, Cecily Cardew;Cecilia Bustamante, Lady Bracknell; Sandra Gutierrez, Miss Prism; Gonzalo Alvarado, Rev. Canon Chasuble; Renato Tejada, Lane; and Marco De Gennaro, Merriman. They were responsibly accompanied by Ivanna Massulis who tirelessly helped the actors to move props and get all what they needed on stage.

They all had a wonderful performance and showed how talented they are. Every scene simply was the result of very hard work since they dedicated days and days to rehearsing with Lolo and Juan Carlos who professionally led them towards success.

I want to thank and acknowledge everybody on and back stage for the great work displayed all along ASDRAM VI. I certainly feel very proud of having at St. George's College students like the ones who took part in "The Importance of Being Earnest" for they showed us the Importance of Being a St. Georgian.

Solidarity Week at St. George's College

St. George's College together with all British Schools are committed to raise funds to build a school in Sunampe, Chincha. Therefore, we organised different activities during three days to collect 3000 dollars. June 25th, 26th, and 27th were very special days for our St. George's Family. We intensively lived these days to show we are shoulder to shoulder with the children from Chincha. All along these three days we could collect 2544 dollars and all this thanks to the effort, support, and enthusiasm of all our students, parents, teachers, and administrative staff.

On the first day, we had all our students wearing jeans. Second day, all came wearing extravagant and it was amazing to see how students and teachers dressed up their best outfits to impress everybody at school. The third day, we had our Hat Day and we finish with a dance...crazy days! wonderful and unforgettable days! Days we had to show everybody that when we want we can!

I am very thankful to all St. George's Patrol, teachers, students, and administrative staff for all their support and responsible answer to this cruzade of love and solidarity.

St. George Patrol led this activity and my recognition and gratitude for all the hard work displayed along this Solidarity Week.

"Thanks to the Heroes" is a beautiful song I found and which helps me exemplify how our San Jorge Family aims at flying high with ideals and dreams to be better.
Half of 2008...time's flying incredibly fast. This is almost mid of June, mid of the year and we have been witnesses of all the efforts displayed by students, teachers, and parents. Amazing!!
My point to write this message on my blog is to stop and reflect on what hitherto has been done.
In Upper School teachers are leading kids to achieve Cambridge Examinations goals. Practice and reinforce all four language skills together with critical thinking skills are all our main goals. This term we have Mock Tests from Middle First to Upper Fifth. Hope results are satisfactory and have either achievements to celebrate or weaknesses to overcome.
In Primary, The Inquiry Approach is our constant and main purpose. We work to help our kids to be knowledgeable, thinkers, risk takers, open minded, well balanced, caring, reflective, communicators. Open Classes were a demonstration of how hard our teachers are working to push our kids toward our student's profile.
At San Jorge is a practice to have volunteers; therefore, this year Alan Bruce is supporting us to enhance all our language objectives for second language development.
Teachers Teaching Teachers Workshops at San Silvestre and Peruano Britanico let our teachers show what they know. Yizelt Ruiz and Violeta Ortiz with Storytelling, Gerardo Lazaro with Science and Vanessa Carpio with "Teaching Grammar Without Teaching Grammar". My gratitude to all of them for their commitment and responsible work.
"Kids Teaching Kids", a project which has eight Upper School students involved, is an expression of caring, responsibility, and love for others. Gabriel Gomez Sanchez, Cesar Miranda, Renato Tejada, Araceli Arana, Ivette Lopez, Adriana Neira, Ximena Grandes, and Cecilia Bustamante have an unforgettable experience sharing all what they know about English. They teach, play and serve to girls from grade five at Juana Alarco de Dammert.

"Kids Teaching Kids"

"Seamos Bilingues" is another project we have at San Jorge to urge our students to be caring and sympathetic. "Seamos Bilingues" motivates our students to share with others what they know. They will not give money, but love, enthusiasm and all what they know about english.
Our students will experience the wonders of "teaching"... they will find out by themeselves all what they can give throughout a lesson.
There are eight students selected to teach English to Fifth grade classes at Juana Larco de Dammert. This is possible thanks to a covenant made with Miraflores Municipality where Tania Cardenas and Fidel Rojas, vice manager and manager of Sports and Education, respectively are the people in charge to promote projects like this which are oriented to offer a social work.
Our eight students are more than happy to start on Wednesday 16th teaching english.
"Kids teaching kids" will be an unforgettable experince for our San Jorge students who in the future will be our leaders...leaders who will know for sure what "to serve" means.

Welcome Alan Bruce

A new school year has begun and with it the Volunteer Programme. Alan Bruce, is a 23 Scottish accountant who left his country to come to Peru and serve as an English assistant at San Jorge School.

He's currently helping in Upper School and getting involved in conversation sessions with students to help them take the International examinations at the end of the year.

We're very happy to have Alan with us who apart from being very enthusistic about his volunteer work at school he also wants to learn Spanish and learn about Hispanic culture.

This year we had the little ones acting and singing for the end of the year show. We had Miss Norma's annual speech and the awarding ceremony to give out all diplomas and awards to all those students whose effort and dedication desreved a recognition.
Another year is gone and with it all our effort and dedication for having a successful 2007...and so was it. Many different things made out of this year a unique one...many challenges and successes...a mixture of sad and happy moments...But for whatever we always had San Jorge Community.

It's impressive how fast this year is gone. It's been full of many different experiences for all of us. Especially for me who after six months of my arrival at school I feel I'm just landing onto my normal Peruvian and Saint Georgian life.

A year abroad has broaden my knowledge and teaching experience tremendously for I learned what to be a Fulbrighter implies in the USA. It was not easy, on the contrary lots of challenges...challenges which were successfully overcome with the help of an entire community who stood up to help me...I thank the Lord for all the wonderful people I met in Sacramento.

The End of the year is on top of us with Graduations, Closing Ceremonies, Christmas Shows, Report Cards and Diplomas. A mixture of feelings for our wonderful kids from Upper Fifth finally leave the nest..eager to fly and search new worlds.

The End of the year for teachers who tirelessly worked to achieve all the objectives planned at the beginning of the year...an outstanding work...my hat off...well done!

Thanks to such an extraordinary work we can close the year with a smile and happily say:

Bring a Can- Bring a Kilo

“Bring a Can- Bring a Kilo”

“A compassionate society is one which cares for the less fortunate who are in need”. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong; Singapore.

At San Jorge we aim at teaching our students to be care and get involved in action projects which provide assistance to people in need in our society. We need to inspire in our kids the spirit to serve and not to be served.

Therefore, every year we organize “Bring a Can- Bring a Kilo” Campaign. This year our students from Nursery, Infants, and Lower were urged to bring toys whilst Middle and Upper were asked to bring groceries.

The donation was given to “Medina Paredes” shanty town through Caritas and Santa Rita de Casia Parrish.

On Friday 14th, Mrs. Mavi de Cardoso, Caritas representative, came to our school to receive the donation together with two members of the community and ten kids. We all were moved by the tender smile of the little kids who could hardly hide their happiness for all the toys they received.

Once more San Jorge School stood up to help and confirm in the heart of the needy that our Lord lives and that He is always there through all the ones who want to serve and act on His behalf.

Chris Craft at San Jorge

Thanks to Juan Carlos Lujan, we had the opportunity to meet the author of Crucialthought. This weblog shows the work done by Chris Craft who teaches Spanish and Latin to Sixth Grade and keep his students highly involved with the work done in class. He also has a web site http://www.christophercraft.com/#top. Here he has his lessons designed to help his students reinforce what they did in class. It´s amazing how he uses internet and captures his students´motivation to learn Spanish and Latin.

We have agreed to start a project and join different countries all over the world. "Life in our Country" is a project which aims at having our students working on collecting pictures which really show how life is in different parst of the world. We´re going to work this project with two classes at San Jorge and we expect to have very good results.

Kayleigh, Steve, and Kory

It's always a great pleasure to have volunteers at San Jorge and this year we have been truly blessed for we have three from Teachperu at San Jorge.
Kayleigh Poole from Britain, Stephen Weaver from Colorado USA , and Kory from California USA. They all share the willingness to help others and the passion for teaching both their language and culture.

She was a keen member of the school cadet force the C.C.F where she was awarded the high rank of Colour Sergeant. She obtained many useful skills during her cadet career, many such as survival skills, and more such as time-keeping and organisation. She attended a Method of Instruction course which led to teaching cadets both in the classroom and “in the field“. She
taught a mixture of age group and class size allowing her to adjust to the needs of the class.
She has been to many different cities such as Hong Kong, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Doha, Harare, Nairobi, Durban as well as travelling in Europe.

She enjoys art and visiting many galleries in her spare time. Studying art in secondary education has allowed her to put this interest into practice and she enjoys painting. Associated with this, photography is a growing interest of her.

She says: "When I first arrived in Lima, the reality of living in such a large city hit me and listening to horror stories of muggings and rogue taxis made me question why I had come. However my experience is a whole lot different now. Lima is a beautiful, fun and active city with a big heart overcoming its ever growing population. Miraflores to me seems to be a young persons district with the beach, shops, bars and cafes being top spots to hang out in with friends. I arrived at San Jorge on my second day in Lima ready to begin. I was introduced to the teachers all of whom are very helpful. Rosita has become like an aunt and Tracy has helped me a great deal to settle in. I was working in lower school and although I was impressed with the standard of english that the enthusiastic pupils had, I reaslised I would be of better use working with smaller groups of children so I was able to give more attention to indviduals should they need it. The whole experience has proven very rewarding and I am very thankful for the opportunity to come to this beautiful country."

Stephen Weaver is from Colrado USA. He came to Peru because he wanted to gain experience as an ESL teacher in a Spanish speaking country. He visited Argentina last year and he would like to see more of South America. He likes warm climates and would like to be more than a tourist.

Stephen leaves San Jorge School today and we're really thankful for all what he contributed to learn more about USA and his language. Thanks a lot!

Kori is from California USA and speaks Spanish at an above average level. He has coached a youth (9 and 10 years) basketball team and he was also a teacher's assistant in a history course. He enjoys reading, sports, and has a passion for the Spanish language.

He is coming to Peru because he plans to do an MBA in Lima at ESAN University. He would like to teachEnglish because it would help him greatly with his Spanish grammar.Furthermore, he studied History in college because he thought that teaching might be something he would want to pursue as a career. He has always valued the importance of teachers as molders of young minds.

Kori is happy to volunteer at San Jorge and kids are learning pretty much from him

They need to work pretty hard to pass the exam satisfactorily. I am sure they will pass with very good results.

Paul Hines is at school again this year and the Ojeda family is hosting him once more.We're very happy to have him at school though this is just a two-week visit.We do know our students will learn much from him for we know he likes to give the most of his abilities.

Tracy Chadbourne at San Jorge School

Tracy Chadbourne is working at school from August 7th.She's at school for she was granted a scholarship from Fulbright Commission.
She's a Spanish teacher at Christian Brothers Highschol in Sacramento, California in the USA. She's worrking there for four years and she applied to Fulbright scholarships because she strongly thinks that this experience will provide her the necessary tools to improve her Sapnish and broaden her knowledge of Spanish countries cultures.
She has come to Peru exchanging position with Lucy Castanon who is currently working at Christian Brothers Highschol.
Here you are some of Tracy's words:

"I know that my stay in a foreign country will enhance my career in ways untold.Not only will I have ann intimate knowledge of my subject area, and an easy natural fluency, but I will have in depth knowledge of the culture as well. This knowledge will add depth and meaning to cultural lessons that in the past might have been considered dry"

Program History
The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 under legislation introduced by then Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State.
Approximately 273,500 "Fulbrighters," 102,900 from the United States and 170,600 from other countries, have participated in the Program since its inception sixty years ago. The Fulbright Program awards approximately 6,000 new grants annually.
Currently, the Fulbright Program operates in over 150 countries worldwide.

This year I am travelling to the USA on July 30th and staying 12 months. I am going to work at Christain Brothers School instead of Tracy Chadbourne who is coming to Peru to work at San Jorge School for 12 months, too. Tracy and I are exchanging schools and lives and we do know this experience will let us grow professionally and will let us share our cultures with our students.

Language Acquisition? That´s Kids´ Stuff!

Teaching a Second Language is very challenging and demands from the language teacher awareness, preparation, and responsibility, since this implies to know deeply what the learner needs to reach a competence in the second language.

We, language teachers, should provide the learners with diffrent learning activities oriented to develop the language skills following the acquisition order. Threfore, when teaching our very little young learners we should start with listening and speaking. Lots of comprehensible in put is crucial to help the kid develop second language skills.

Nursery teachers have a great advantage when teaching a Second Language because the knowledge gained of mother tongue is significantly reduced at the age of three, four, or five. Hence, the necesity to design our lessons based on songs, storytelling, rhymes, dramatizations, games, chants, and poems. All this with the purpose to simulate an atmosphere which invites kids to acquire the second language in a the same way mother tongue is acquired.

On June 24th we invited teachers from different Nursery Schools to talk about these so important principles that second language teachers should know in order to succeed in teaching kids.

We specially thank and appreciate all the following Nursery teachers who attended the workshop prepared by San Jorge School.

My time in Peru was a once in a lifetime experience and everything I hoped it would be. I was able to meet many wonderful and interesting people, and have made many lifelong friends. The countryside of Cusco was beautiful and the big city of Lima, though interesting, made me appreciate my home city even more than I already did. What can I say about the food? My favorite, though simple, was pollo a la brasa. The most interesting had to be chicken soup, with more parts of the chicken than I'm used to here in the States. Thank you very much to the wonderful teachers, staff, and most importantly, the students of San Jorge. I look forward to seeing you again in the future.

This workshop was held at San Ignacio de Loyola Uiversity 9th English Convention.
Franz Guerra and I prepared this workshop to share all the acculturation activities we daily have in Nursery, Infants, Lower, and Upper School.

Teachers at USIL shown very interested in learning how "acculturation" depply contribute to make the acquisition of a second language more meanigful and easy.

We talked about the Word Puzzles, Idioms, Rhymes, and Proverbs that we have every day.

I want to thank Franz because he daily sent me all these activities to be worked in class. Certainly, students and teachers excitedly wait for the "Word Puzzle" of the day which sometimes are easy to decipher and sometimes are truly hard to discover the hidden words.

This event was very successful thanks to the responsible participation of all of us, teachers and presenters. Everybody had something to learn that day and something to teach.
All workshops were well prepared and carefully thought to fulfill all the particpants´ expectations.
Personally, I learned a lot from all the teachers who anttended "Storytelling" workshop and I strongly believe they also learned something from us. Especially when they saw our students´anthologies. They could hardly believe our kids were the authors of such good stories. I felt very happy and satisfied of all the work done by both our teachers and students in class.
"Storytelling" is certainly a door open to creativity, knowledge, investigation, imagination, and exploration. When our teachers read a story to their kids they are helping them to discover all what is new for them and learn how to make it theirs.
Thank you to everyone for making TTT 2006 such success.

Kimberly is a volunteer who arrived in May at our school and little by little has shown us how brilliant, talented, and rightous woman she is.
She is currently teaching in Upper School. She teaches World History and Family Life to Upper Third class and World Literature and Language Arts to CAE level; she also teaches Current Events to Level Two, and Family life to Upper Second class.
Kimberly is always very concerned for the values teenagers are growing and constantly urges students to be the future citizens of their country.
We want to express our gratitude to Kim and ask her to continue working as hard as she is doing it. Thanks Kim! We love you!

Dave Morrison came to school and volunteer for about three weeks at school. He worked with Upper Third, FCE level, and CAE level classes. He worked on conversations sessions with the students and helped Kimberly in her History lessons with Upper Third.
We are very thankful for his volunteer work at school, however, we´re sad because he suddenly had to fly back to USA to work there as a firefighter. He said he had a very attractive offering. Well, good for him. Now he´s fighting fires. Good luck Dave and we hope to hear from you soon!

Anniversary and the Latin American Head Conference

Last Thursday and Friday were devoted to celebrate our School Anniversary. We had a Musical Concert on Thursday and an outstanding performance of our students in our Anniversary Ceremony on Friday.

Here you can see some pictures. The first one shows Franz Guerra, our English Area Consultant, playing the piano. The second one shows Franz and Mrs Norma Bustamante, our School Headmistress. Thanks to Franz for his constant support to all the activities programmed by the school.

Another important event held on Thursday evening is the official acceptance of San Jorge School in the Latin American Head Conference (LAHC).

The third picture shows the members of LAHC, David Bamfort, Executive Officer ; Donald Jones, Vice Chair and Cambridge College Headmaster, and Mrs Norma Bustamante.

All San Jorge family members feel very proud for having the distinction of being part of this World Wide Conference which is formed by different bilingual Schools with a British practice.

They satisfactorily passed the PET and FCE exams taken at the ACPB and marked in the University of Cambridge in UK.
They took these exams and followed an intensive training course at school. They are from left to right:

Upper Third Class/ PET examination : Adriana Neira, Ivette Lopez, and Cesar Miranda who passed with merit.

Upper Fourth Class/ PET and FCE : Ana Sofia Gonzales, Jimena Lau, and Sergio Navarro (FCE)

I would like to thank the headmistress, Norma Bustamante Dawson, and all of the staff at San Jorge for allowing me to work as an English volunteer at their school. I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to work with the children at San Jorge and to have gained valuable teaching experience in preparation for my new career as a teacher back in Scotland. Everyone is aware of how important it is to know English. I believe that it is vital to expose children around the world to this international language in order to give them a variety of opportunities for success. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time teaching English in Peru. It has been a truly rewarding and memorable experience.... my only regret is that I am not staying longer! I would also like to thank my host family Pilar Galup for making me feel so welcome in her home and for ensuring that my short stay here in Lima was an enjoyable and unforgettable experience. I will miss you all.

We want to thank you for sharing this happy occasion with our family. We should mention that our children have been evaluated and selected along with other 29 kids out of 70 to be part of the "Pre National Children Choir". This means they're now eligible to belong to the National Children Choir when they may need more members to renew their group. As far as we understand, the promotions occur in July and December every year.

This is Bridget Florens with Pilar Galup (her host family) This is the second time Pili hosts a volunteer and we feel very grateful indeed.
Bridget arrived at the bus station on Friday 3rd from Huaraz.There she helped a group of homeless children at Inabif for a month. She says it was very gratifying to offer a charity work for those kids in need.
She is going to stay one week with us for she is flying back to Scotland where she lives with her family. She is a graduated student and her major is in Geography.

I just thought I would say hi and introduce myself.
I'm originally from Zimbabwe but have been living in Scotland for 9 years. I graduated from Aberdeen University in July last year and am currently on a gap year. I will be returning to University in September to do a PGCE in teaching. I am really looking forward to taking part in Teachperu... it will be a great experience!
I'm leaving for Peru on Februray 1st and will be in Huaraz for 4 weeks. Jeremy has informed me that I'll be coming to Lima on March 6th.

At Radio Miraflores

Yesterday, Sunday 19th, Maribel Guerrero, Head of Nursery and Infants level and I went to Radio Miraflores to talk about our beloved School. We invited people to come and visit our school to know all what we do at school such as the Storytelling Programme, the Volunteer Programme, The Bilingual Programme and all the activities we have for the little ones. It was a great experience.

p.s. I visited New York a few weeks ago (it was VERY cold). This is a picture of me in front of a building at Columbia University. Our old vice president Al Gore teaches law classes here. This is in Central Park. I think that it is probably more pretty in the summer. The Statue of Liberty is in the background. I had never been to New York before this trip. I learned a lot and gained a lot of new perspectives on America. New York is a lot different than Idaho!
We are very happy to count on her this year in Upper School. She will be hosted by Rosa Rios, who has been sharing her house with Amy, Kimberly´s friend, Anna Decker, and Emily Philps.
We are eager to meet Kim at the airport and outloudly shout: "Welcome to Peru"!

Christmas Shows

Dearest all,

Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th were devoted to end the year 2005 at Saint George´s School with Christmas Shows and Carols neatly prepared by our teachers and children.

Diplomas and awards were given to give all those students who responsibly studied and steadily grew all along this year with the orientation of both parents and teachers.

2005 was certainly a year full of successes in all the activities we organized at the beginning of the year. Successes which represent hard work, leadership, and love for what we do.

Thanks to Mrs Norma Bustamante for what she represents for us. Thanks to her leadership, enthusiasm, perseverance, strength, and professional guidance. We have learned to love her and admire her muchly!

Well done for working hard to get to this point; it is a great achievement to have come this far. I really enjoyed helping to teach you all when I visited in Summer. You were all well behaved, attentive and polite. You were dedicated to your studies. More than this, you were very welcoming and friendly. So not only are you good students, but you are also kind, well-rounded young people. For all these reasons, you truly deserve to move on into the Upper School. Si algo contribuye a procurarnos un poco de alegría en nuestras vidas son sin duda:”los regalos” y creo muchas veces hemos pensado en términos de “cosas” para regalar. Olvidamos tal vez que todo hombre es un regalo. Un regalo para alguien, pues fuimos creados para entregarnos mutuamente los unos a los otros.
Algunos nos vienen magníficamente empaquetados, otros envueltos en papel ordinario, pero sigue siendo cierto que lo más importante no es el aspecto físico ni la envoltura sino lo que hay dentro...Nosotros, como los niños, fácilmente nos equivocamos pensando que el regalo de más tamaño o mejor envuelto es el mejor.
Hay regalos que se hacen esperar, como se espera un amigo o como el hijo que algún día vendrá. A veces los regalos son difíciles de abrir. No quieren ser desgarrados en su envoltura, anhelarían irse abriendo con la ilusión y respeto de los grandes misterios o quizá se tenga miedo que una vez abierto no sea recibido...
Por eso todo regalo debe darse en la esperanza de ser aceptado y en la confianza de ser bien acogido. ¡Soy una persona: soy pues un regalo! Un regalo, primero para mi mismo, que debo ir abriendo de a pocos y con ilusión.
Mi envoltura(aunque de alguna importancia) no es lo primordial.¿He mirado ya dentro de mi embalaje? ¿Tengo miedo de hacerlo? Tal vez no quiera ser el regalo que soy...Una cosa es cierta: soy un don único, producto del amor de Dios. ¿Cuántas veces, preferí abrir, o que me deje abrir otros paquetes de regalo y el mío no lo dejo abrir por nadie? Para muchos es cierto, seré una envoltura andando, un regalo que no llega a nadie.
Todo encuentro humano es siempre un intercambio de “regalos” No temas dejar romper tus primeras envolturas, porque el interior nunca se agota y se puede renovar siempre. La amistad es un regalarse, de persona a persona, tal vez bajo expresiones y signos diversos, pero en definitiva entrega de un yo a un tu, tal como es cada uno.

My time at San Jorge

Before I came to San Jorge, I was very nervous to be returning to school... I had images in my mind of strict teachers, dull classrooms, and lots and lots of work.
However, San Jorge has not been like that at all. Instead, San Jorge has been a place of fun – not just a place where young people go to study, but also a place where young people grow and develop; a place where everyone is friendly, welcoming and accepting.
At times, it has been testing. I was very nervous when I took my first class, and didn’t know how I would get through the hour. However, day by day, I became more and more confident, and that was all thanks to the wonderful atmosphere here in the school.
My time here has not just been for teaching... it has also been for learning. I have learnt a great deal about the country of Peru, about its people, its dances... its games of volley. (I have to say a big thankyou to Miss Eli for the intensive volleyball training, prior to the Olympic games!)
My time wouldn’t have been the same had it not been for the teachers I have been working with, Miss Eva and Miss Tania, and all the children in their classes, 5th and 6th grade.
I am also eternally indebted to the Ojeda family, who have made me feel that Peru is not a foreign country to me, but that it feels like home!
I will miss you all.

Open Class at San Jorge School

Congratulations to all the teachers and students who made possible the success of such an important event in our school.
All the students had the opportunity to show a little of what is daily done in class to their parents. These could appreciate and value all what their children are learning and how they`re putting it into practice.

In this picture we can see a group of students from Fifth grade performing "Rampelstilskin". Well done kids!

Kids had a neat presentation. We were witnesses of excellent work!

Thanks to all the parents who attended this Open Class and closely followed in detail what their children are capable to do.
They couldn`t believe their children could read, sing, recite, and act in a second language.

Upper School students`presentations were also great. In the picture we can see a presentaion on "Animating" Karen Valverde and Ines Franco worked very hard and the results were awesome! Well done!

Upper Third class presented one of the stories they read in World Literature. They talked about Literary elements and summarized the story. "Something Funny" is the one they liked the most.
Congratulations for such a good work!

Volunteering in Peru A Great Experience

The arrival was on Sunday, 5th of June when Lucy, my coordinator and my peruvian host family welcomed me to PERU where my exciting new experience should start.

The first day at school, it was scary when I was thinking about what was going to expect me. Lucy showed me around and introduced me to all staff and students. I was impressed fristly because of the kindness and warmness of the people but also the level of English most of the students have.
It was incredible!
The fist week I was helping out some teachers in Upper School. I really enjoyed seeing how different students study in Peru and also the way teachers approach their lessons. Teaching Current Events and the preperation for the CAE exam was also a nice experience which was very enjoyable due to the enthusiasm of the students.

Teaching Lower School was rather different as I was helping out with some music classes and also with the school choir. I really enjoyed each single lesson for the whole one and a half months I was staying and teaching in San Jorge School in Miraflores. My time in the school passed too fast and I wished I had brought more time with me.

The homestay with my family was the best time I have ever had. My host mum Rosita and her family were taking care of me a lot so I really felt like being at home.
I had one months left to explore the country. During my travels I viewed an amazing archaeological site, Machu Picchu. Also seeing a lot of different climate zones near the sea, mountains and also the jungle were completly new places I had never been to before.This all still seems like a dream for me and I still cannot believe I have explored such a beautiful country full of energy.
Thank you very much to everybody in San Jorge School. I wish you all the best.

The Veggie Harvest

Today was a very hectic one for all teachers and kids in Infants and Lower School. The advanced class students prepared posters to announce this veggie sale. Studenst from different levels were harvesting cabbages, carrots, celery, raddishes, spinachs, and others. They packed them all and left them ready to be sold tomorrow at lunch time. Each veggie bag is only s/1.00.
Can`t wait to buy one?

Congratulations to everyone in the drama contest! That is great news! Wish I could have seen the final production! I am sure it was perfect!
I am back at University again working hard. It is very busy here. I have so much work to do, including a dissertation (8000 words long!!) to do. I am also directing and producing a play this Christmas; 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'...do you know it? Hopefully it will be great but we have a very small budget and a lot to buy so fingers crossed!
Hope everyone is well. I am missing San Jorge very much.

On Holiday!

Well, finally we`re on holiday!Yeah!!!!!! Now, I`m at home with my two crazy daughters. Unfortunately, they`re studying and we can`t have our lazy days together. They say, finally they`ll have warm meals, desserts, juice, and all those delicious things mum prepares when she`s at home ha,ha,ha...That`s what they think...

Lots of activities, events, and successes. I`m very happy for all English area objectives were successfully achieved. Volunteer Programme, ASDRAM, Creative Writing Competition, and Inquiry Approach workshops with the Snowballs. Wow! All these activities in a single term? Yup!
Now, after vacation we`re having Open Day, Veggie Patch Harvest, Christmas Show, and vacation...Yeah!
Therefore, we should work very hard to deserve the last one,ha,ha,ha.
Great days lived at San Jorge School. As Miss Norma says we`re living a "Harvest time" and I do agree with her.
I`m very happy to work with such a great team! Thanks for everything!

Sorry for my late response. I was busy sorting out my timetables and so on.
I am in Birmingham now, in my second years of studies (Political Economy) and I am having a great time.

When I finished teaching at San Jorge, I went to Tumbes, stayed there for a couple of days, then I took a bus to Equador. I spend lots of money in there and I was surprised how expensive their goods are (they use $US up there).

I know that you tried your best to make my time as comfortable as possible in Peru (and you succeded, I really enjoyed teaching).

Hi Lucy,Congratulations on the drama contest!! Everyone must be over the moon! We all had such a brilliant time down there this summer. I can't thank you enough.Looking forward to returning to South America already. I miss Peru - you can only drink so much coca tea in Wales before you start wishing you were in Lima again..Well, I've arrived back in Wales and am starting to settle back into college life. Everything seems quite tame and quiet here after the extremes of Peru. My old school in Ireland was 100 years old last weekend so that was a nice trip down memory lane - I'm starting to feel old now. But those memories were definitely not as good as my memories of anticuchos and ceviche, hmmm I could really go for some creoale soup right now!Thanks again Lucy and San Jorge,ç

Visiting the British Embassy

CAE Level students went to the British Embassy last week with Mrs Norma Bustamante, Ms Elizabeth Huisa, and Dietrich Lehman (volunteer).
There they had a quiz on "London 2012" and watched a video on "Studying in the UK".
They say it was very interesting and could broaden their knowledge about the Olympic Games in London.

Today we had our Lower Fourth students totally absorbed and involved in what thye had to do, what? the videoconference with Bremen City Hall and more than 200 hundred Schools in Europe. It was really impressive to see how responsible our kids are when they are asked to do something. All of them had a neat presentation on "National Reservations and Parks" Congratulations! Mrs Elizabeth Castro and Mrs Yizelt Ruiz were really proud of their students since they showed everybody knowledge of both Science and English.
Mrs. Norma Bustamante, Mr. Fernando Andrade and other authorities of Miraflores City Hall , reporters from "El Comercio" and other local newspapers were witnesses of such important event in our country.

Video Conference with Bremen in Germany

On September 14th we`re having a video conference with the City Hall of Bremen in Germany. Twenty Schools are having an exhibt there and San Jorge School will be also participating with the topic of "National Reservations in Peru". Anna Decker came to San Jorge School thanks to "Teachperu". This organization is led by Jeremy Keates who sent Anna to Peru in June. She helped us in Upper School and supported in nearly all English lessons.
Thanks Anna and thanks to Rosa Rios for hosting her for about three months.
Here her testimony.
Well, I have been here for more than three weeks already. I have experienced so many great things so far. Teaching is really fun here in Lima. The people are really welcoming and very helpful. The students are also very nice and it seems they are enjoying their time with me here.
Lucy didn't make me sing...thank God...not on my first day at school...she made me hold a little speech...that was alright...
She told me about the time when you came to Peru.
Tomorrow is a bank holiday, so in the morning I'm going to take a bus to Huaraz so I need to find a hostel to stay in? I'm going to stay for the weekend.
My Peruvian host family is also great. I'm really enjoying my adventure. I'm glad I came, I'm learning a lot of new things and I hope the students and teachers feel the same.
Well I have got more than a month left in the school and then I'm going to travel around for one month to get to know the country.
It's a great experience!

I want to thank all host families for all what they have done to achieve our goals with this volunteer programme. Thanks to Lujan family. I`m sure they spent very happy moments with Emily and vice versa.

Thanks to Nancy Landa for hosting Claire. I´m sure Leticia could practice her English with her, though I know Claire could learn very little Spanish.

Thanks to Bustamante family for hosting Chika. They took care of her when she got sick for two days. Nothing serious but Chika told me that they took care of her as if she had got a very serious disease,ha,ha,...Well, Chika was really lucky because Judith prepares delicious food and Chika will never forget her delicious chicken soup...yummy,yummy!

Thanks to Galup family. Pilar host Adrian and Dietrich. She says both took turns to do the washing up...ha,ha,ha. Both of them want to come back soon and meet their host family again.

Thanks to Corante family. They hosted Angie and made her feel as if she were at home.

All stories should come to an end...and this is the case of our "Volunteers Programme"
Good bye dear friends!
It seems it was yesterday when we welcomed them with a noisy applause. We were full of expectations of having them in our school and they were anxious to get involved in our school activities. Thus, Angie, Claire, Alex, Emily, Josie, George, Paul, Dietrich, Adrian, and Chika worked intensively making a display of brilliant and responsible work in all assigned tasks.
We will never forget their valuable participation in our classes with our pupils and teachers who were really eager to have them in all the English lessons. Throughout this time, we have learned a lot from them, their responsibility, punctuality, enthusiasm, commitment and that sense of humour that helps them face problems and sort them out as soon as they come up.
To conclude, I do hope they have enjoyed this amazing experience in our school. We are deeply grateful for all their valuable support and for sharing part of their lives with us. We are convinced that having them was enormously beneficial since they helped us to enhance the teaching of English and to brake barriers between our countries.

Olympic Games Debate

Well, last Friday we had our first debate on London 2012 Olympic Games with Chika, Angie, and Adrian. There were very interesting participations and Mimi Corante conducted the activity pretty well. Congratulations to all of them.

Olympic Games

We started our Olympic Games on Monday 22nd and yesterday and today we`ve been living all the enthusiasm of the different competitions such as Volleyball, Basketball, Football, High jump, and Athletics. All houses have participated and these are some snapshots of the great moments lived by our students, teachers, and volunteers.

Today, Today, is a happy, happy day...this is what one of our cheers say. Here the Super Reds celebrating four won games. Wow! It seems we´ll win. Hip,Hip, Hooray!!

I`m glad to announce that Lesley and Kenneth are coming to San Jorge School this coming Tuesday. Everything is ready to welcome them and to show them all the work done all along the First Semester. This time our English teachers are going to explain in detail the different parts of the Unit of Inquiry and all what they have been doing along this year to accomplish "The Inquiry Approach" objectives.They`re going to exhibit their students works, portfolios, stories, KWL charts, and so forth.

I`m really very thankful for the effort and professional work shown by the English teachers in order to improve and give the best from them all.

This was a very hectic week indeed. First, meet the volunteers at the airport, introduce them all in the assembly, have them supporting our English and music lessons, in the infermary...well, this was simply G-R-E-A-T!!
For all of us this experience means to continue learning and to "live" what we teach so professionaly and enthusiastically "language" and "culture".

British Council

This is the second year the British Council organizes a quiz based on themes related to Great Britain. Last year our students took a quiz on "Wales". This year a group of ten students have been invited to participate in a Quiz on "2012 London Olympics". This will be held on Septemeber 9th at the British Council.
For this purpose our CAE class is getting ready to participate. In Current Events they have been assigned different tasks oriented to develop thinking, critical, social, and communication skills. They're going to have a debate on this issue on September 1st at school. They're planning to invite Mrs. Norma Bustamante, Chika Muorah and Dietrich Lehman to be part of the debate.

Dearest Miss Norma,

Thanks for your words. In fact I have to thank you a lot and to this great family as well. I remember when you asked me to come to work at San Jorge, I said: "working with you... would be like being in a paradise",ha,ha,ha...Maybe not in the sense to be relaxed and doing anything, ha,ha,ha on the contrary, I did know I was going to learn a lot with you, and so did I. I`ve grown professionally and personally here working with you, though I know I have to work harder to continue improving... well, we never stop learning.
There`s a big difference between Lucy who came in 2003 and the one in 2005. Then, all what I`m doing , it`s just to apply what I´ve learned from you all along these three years. And these are not flattering words, I`m saying this from the very bottom of my heart. This is something said by all the people who had the blessing to have you on their lives, for you`re an example for all of us.

Dearest Lucy,
As I wrote to you in your personal e mail address, you deserve more than congratulations for all the work you have done to have the ten British volunteers in our school.
It has meant hours and hours of coordination with Hipact , with the host families, with the teachers in our school. You have made that all personnel have become involved because of your enthusiasm, energy and willingness to do the things well.
You give added value to the position of Head of English, you have gone beyond your duties with this programme. The programme allows our students to see further, to find out about other realities, to improve their English and to share our concerns while the volunteers live with their families. It will also help our teachers develop awareness of how things are in Peru and abroad, how English is used by native speakers, and how much they need to continue their professional development.
Lucy, God bless you every single moment of your life, you give so much and expect little in return.

This is Chika Muorah, Hipact coordinator. We`re very lucky to have her here with us. In fact this is the second time Hipact coordinator comes to Peru with the volunteers. The first time was in 1999 when we established the first link.

Muchas Gracias Juan José por tu comentario en mi weblog. En realidad me has hecho sentir que realmente hay alguien que lo lee...ja,ja,ja ...y la verdad es que se siente muy bien!!

Realmente soy yo la que tiene que agradecer enormemente a toda mi familia San Jorgina por creer y apostar en los proyectos del área de Inglès, por exigirnos el estar a la vanguardia de los últimos avances de la tecnología, por otorgarnos la posibilidad de seguir capacitándonos y seguir creciendo profesionalmente, aunque al final te quede ese sabor de que ..."Solo sé que nada sé". Sí, es increíble... descubres algo y a los pocos días descubres que eso que aprendiste es ya parte del pasado...Siempre he afirmado que estamos como si vivieramos en una centrífuga...si dejas de dar vueltas el sistema te expulsará...y me aterra el pensar que eso nos pase.

Ustedes nos dan las herramientas para avanzar...nosotros lo único que tenemos que hacer es poner en práctica "Putting into Practice" todo lo que aprendemos en beneficio de nuestros alumnos. Me gustó mucho eso de que mi weblog servirá de ejemplo...me encantaría que los demás profesores también tengan su weblog y sientan el deseo de compartir lo que aprenden, lo que saben, sus proyectos. A veces nos escudamos en la frase "No tengo tiempo" a la cual inmediatemente podemos responder "¡Querer es poder!".

British Volunteers in Peru

Adrian, Alex, Claire, Emily, Chika, Georg, Dietrich, Josie, Paul, and Angela arrived yesterday at 10:30 safe and sound . However, we could meet them three hours after...we were really worried because we thought something had happened. Fortunately everything was fine. It was only our country efficient sytem at the airport...come on!
We`re really happy to have them all with us. On Monday we´re having a warm welcome ceremony with the students and teachers at school. There`s when the project really starts...amazing, isn`t it?
All volunteers will be supporting in the English, music, dance, and PE lessons. I`ll be publishing a picture of the arrival this coming Monday.

Adrian Mc Breen is a 23 year old Irish student. He is currently following a master programme at Aberystwyth University in Wales. He is studying American Literature and will be finishing his studies in September 2006.He likes storytelling, telling jokes, making music, and Creative Writing.
At School he will be working in Upper School and support in all Ms Castañón´s English lessons from August 8 th to September 2 nd. He will be in charge of the “Creative Writing Competition” and will organize the Speaking sessions with all Upper School students. He will be closely working with Chika Muorah and Dietritch Lehman.

Chika Muorah is a recent graduate in Law from Brunel University in London. She is currently working as HiPACT Coordinator. She works in collaboration with educational authorities overseas to set up educational project in rural areas. She prepares the international projects itinerary, organizes and manages the volunteers. She works alongside universities and schools in the UK in raising funds and donation of books for school and universities in Africa.

Chika likes reading, travelling, tracking activities and is very skilful in computing, leadership, communication, and problem solving.

At School she will be working in Upper School and support in all Mr Escobar’s English lessons from August 8 th to August 25 th. She will be in charge of the assemblies on Thursday in Upper School and will be closely working with Adrian McBreen and Dietritch Lehman in the Speaking sessions with Upper School students.

Dietrich Lehman is a 22 year old German student. He is currently studying International Relations at St Andrews University in Scotland. He will be finishing his studies in July 2007.He likes languages: Shanghai-Chinese, German, English, and Spanish. His brother Georg Lehman is also involved in this project and he is supporting the English area in Lower School.
Their parents are coming in September to join them in this adventure. Isn’t it great?
At School he will be working in Upper School and support in all Ms Elizabeth Castro’s English lessons from August 8 th to September 2 nd when all volunteers fly back to UK. He will stay two weeks more and will be supporting CAE lessons.
He will be closely working with Chika Muorah and Adrian Mc Breen preparing the Speaking sessions with Upper School students. Get ready to speak in English!

Paul Hine is a 21 year old British student. He is currently studying Medicine at Manchester University. He will be finishing his studies in September 2009.

He plays the piano and clarinet and all round lover music. He also likes drama and did amateur dramatics at his local theatre for many years before starting the university.

At School he will be working in Lower School and support in all Miss Eva Silva’s English lessons from August 8 th to September 2 nd. He will also have some music lessons with Mrs Barbara Leyva and support in the school choir. He will be closely working with Jossie Hooker, and Rita Heckathorn, our drama teacher. Rehearsals are going to be awesome with such a great team.
We do know they two will help tremendously to achieve our goals in the ASDRAM III.

Georg Lehman is a 22 year old German student. He is currently studying Political Economy at Birmingham University. He will be finishing his studies in July 2007.

He is very skilful in public speaking. He considers himself funny if the situation allows it. He worked as a male nurse in Berlin. Therefore, he and Angela Audretsch will contribute to help Jane Chavez in the infirmary.

At School he will be working in Lower School and support in all Miss Maria Pia Guerra and Mrs Yizelt Ruiz´ English lessons from August 8 th to September 16 th. He will also be responsible for the assemblies on Tuesday and will work closely with Lower School teachers.

Josie Hooker is a 19 year old British student. She is currently studying Modern Languages: French and Spanish at Manchester University. She will be finishing her studies in June 2008.
She plays the flute and got high grades in music and dance. Maybe she can teach us some typical dances from UK. Let’s ask her what she thinks about it. She also enjoys drama and photography.

At School she will be working in Infants Level and support in all Mrs. Claudia Donayre and Violeta Ortiz´ English lessons from August 8 th to September 2 nd. Emily Philips is a 21 year old British student. She is currently studying Chemistry at Durham University. She will be finishing her studies in June 2006.

She likes netball and has been captain in her College National Club. She is also currently organizing a team. She possesses leadership and interpersonal skills which help her to succeed as a leader. She considers herself friendly and get on with everyone. She enjoys cooking and computing.
